Brief Introduction to Aquatic Park

Two-thirds of this 100-acre, mile-long city park is water  – one large and two small lagoons, separated from San Francisco Bay by the I-80 freeway.  The first version of the freeway created the lagoons – it was built on fill just off shore during the Great Depression of the 1930s, funneling cars to the new Bay Bridge. The federal Works Progress Administration turned what would have been a stagnant cesspool into a park used in many ways by plants, animals, and people.
